Accepting bookings from 24 August 2026

Fees

What an AMSA STCW medical costs.

Published in full, because you should not have to ring a clinic to find out what you are paying. Every figure below is the total payable, GST included, and nothing is added at the counter.

The medical

Every fee on this site is the total payable, including GST. There is nothing to add. The GST component is shown beneath each price for anyone who needs it for an expense claim or a business activity statement.

The examination is identical and the standing fee is the same whether you book for yourself or a company books for you. A company booking includes a direct line to our Senior Medical Examiner by email and mobile, and the liaison that comes with arranging medicals for one or more seafarers. An introductory individual rate applies for a published window.

Individual seafarer, introductory rate

AMSA STCW medical, individual seafarer

$334Includes $30.36 GST. $303.64 excl. GST

Introductory rate for appointments from 24 August 2026 to 22 November 2026. After that window the individual fee is $434($394.55 excl. GST), the same as the company fee.

Applies where a seafarer arranges and pays for their own medical. The standing fee is the same as the company fee.

Employer or company booking

AMSA STCW medical, employer or company booking

$434Includes $39.45 GST. $394.55 excl. GST

Applies where an employer, maritime operator, crewing company, recruitment agency or authorised coordinator arranges and pays for the medical. Includes company liaison and processing support.

A company booking includes a direct line to Dr Lincoln Luk, our Senior Medical Examiner, by email and mobile. It is not a different examination.

Worked through

What you would actually pay.

The gap between a first medical and a renewal is the single biggest source of confusion in this sector, and the chest X-ray is the reason. Here it is, set out.

Note

A renewal is the medical fee alone

If you have held an AMSA certificate before, no chest X-ray is required unless there is a relevant history or the inspector considers one clinically indicated. AMSA states plainly that there is no requirement for routine chest X-rays.

Note

Not covered by Medicare

An AMSA STCW medical is a pre employment evaluation rather than treatment of the person examined, so no Medicare rebate applies. That same characterisation is why GST applies to it.

Some employers and training providers reimburse the cost, so it is worth asking yours.

First AMSA medical only

The chest X-ray.

AMSA requires a chest X-ray for anyone entering the maritime industry for the first time, which its standards also call a pre-sea medical. It is not part of a routine AMSA medical.

It is performed off site by Western Radiology rather than at a Marlu Health clinic, so it is charged separately and is never added into the fee for your appointment. Marlu Health issues the referral and helps you book it, so you are not left finding a radiology clinic yourself.

Allow at least 3 business days between the X-ray and your medical. The assessment cannot proceed without the result. Booking both in the same week is the most common way a first appointment is lost, and it is the single most expensive scheduling mistake available to a new entrant.

Chest X-ray, pre-sea medical

Chest X-ray for a pre-sea medical

$120Includes $10.91 GST. $109.09 excl. GST

Required for anyone entering the maritime industry for the first time. Marlu Health issues the referral and helps you book it with a partner provider.

Whether this is invoiced by Marlu Health or paid to the provider is being confirmed

Important

Tell us if your date is tight

If this is your first AMSA medical and your preferred appointment is less than 3 business days away, say so when you contact us. We would rather move the date than have you attend an appointment that cannot be completed.

How the chest X-ray works

Only where the assessment requires it

What else can be charged.

Nothing here is routine. Each is charged only where the examining medical inspector cannot complete the assessment without it.

Charged only when required

ECG

$90Includes $8.18 GST. $81.82 excl. GST

AMSA requires a resting ECG for applicants aged 55 and over, and a stress ECG where clinically indicated. Charged only when it is required.

Charged only if required

Further investigations

  • Other imaging, pathology or specialist report

Charged by Marlu Health or by a third party provider where an assessment cannot be completed without it.

  • Additional administration or liaison

Only where the work falls outside the scope of the service booked.

Where an investigation is needed, you are told what it is and what it costs before it is arranged.

Cancellation and refunds

When a fee is not refunded.

These rules are strict and they are applied. Read them before you book, not afterwards.

Cancellation, rescheduling and refund rules
If this happensThen
Cancelling after 12 noon on the previous business dayNo refund is processed.
Cancelling before that cutoffYour fee is refunded.
Rescheduling, at any timeNo rescheduling fee applies, including inside the cancellation cutoff. Moving your appointment is subject to availability.
Not attending your appointmentNo refund is processed.
Arriving with an incomplete consent form or questionnaireMarlu Health may refuse to proceed, postpone or cancel. You may not be entitled to a refund.
If Marlu Health needs to cancelWe will offer you another appointment. If that does not suit, your fee is refunded in full.

Please read

Incomplete forms are the most common cause

If these are not complete when you arrive, Marlu Health may refuse to proceed, postpone or cancel your appointment. Staff on site may allow you to complete them at the clinic, but this is at their discretion and is not guaranteed. You may not be entitled to a refund.

See exactly which forms you must complete

Note

How the cutoff is counted

The cutoff is 12 noon on the previous business day, counting Monday to Friday only and excluding public holidays. Business days are Monday to Friday, and public holidays do not count.

So a Monday morning appointment is governed by 12 noon on the previous Friday. If that Friday is a public holiday, the cutoff moves back to 12 noon on the Thursday.

Note

Rescheduling carries no fee

Moving your appointment is free at any time, including inside the cancellation cutoff, and is subject to availability. If a date is going to be difficult, move it rather than miss it.

Employers

Company bookings and invoicing.

Employer and company bookings are charged the company fee, which covers the liaison and processing work a company booking generates, including a direct line to Dr Lincoln Luk by email and mobile.

Invoicing is available only to employers with an approved provider account. Terms are strictly 14 days with no exceptions. Approval is required before any booking can be charged to an account.

Invoice terms

Employer invoice terms

14 days

Strictly, and only for employers holding an approved provider account. Stating it plainly now is fairer than discovering it at the end of a project.
